Indonesia sets aside US$7.5 million to build coral reef gardens in Bali

The Indonesian government is setting course to build coral reef gardens in five locations across Bali in hopes of conserving and restoring marine ecosystems around the island, as officials aim to also boost economic recovery through the project’s labour-intensive work.

Officials introduced the Indonesia Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) program just yesterday, with Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo saying that “active efforts” are required to restore coral reefs ecosystems in Indonesia.

“Later on, the coral reef garden is not just an underwater tourism attraction, but also an educational or research facility,” Edhy said.

As a whole, the current plan is to develop a 50-hectares coral reef garden which would be split into five locations in Nusa Dua, Sanur, Serangan, Pandawa, and Buleleng. Officials have set aside IDR111 billion (US$7.5 million) from the national economic recovery program (PEN), and are targeting as many as 11,000 workers to get involved in the project.

These gardens will serve as sites to transplant coral, and officials say they are working with researchers and academics in order to further develop ICRG.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has reportedly welcomed the plan, noting how he has yet to consider the potential of a coral-reef program like this.

“This is a potential I have yet to consider, it has never been managed well with adequate policies, and it has not been utilized to foster economic growth for the people of Bal

Indefatigable” would be a good word to describe successful Bali businessman – Reinhold Jantzen.

Reinhold Jantzen was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1940, when humankind had just embarked on WWII. By 1980, following education and overseas assignments in various fishery projects in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, Jantzen found himself busily establishing a family and a business destined to become a significant force in the local business community.

His Bali sojourn also included commencing in 1996, 27 years of dedicated service to the Federal Republic of Germany as Honorary Consul in Bali.

In 1983, the Jantzen family established PT Soejasch Bali – a company producing and distributing fine food products. Over the past four decades, PT Soejasch Bali has grown into a nationwide concern with branch offices in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. At the Company’s core is international quality meat products, including german sausages and hams, cold cuts, and salami.

While many Indonesian companies are now in a state of hibernation due to the global pandemic, PT Soejasch Bali has, once again, proven its “indefatigability” by making a major investment with the opening of a modern new complex on Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai Np. 88A, opposite SOS Mekika. A bold and strikingly new beautiful building, the Soejasch Bali Complex houses:

  • Das Bistro by Mamas – a restaurant and bar-bistro featuring attractive prices on a wide-ranging menu that boasts salads, soups, seafood items, pizza, burgers, BBQ items, an array of delicious top-quality sausages, imported grain and grass-fed prime Australian beef, and tempting dessert items. Cocktails, draft beer, bottled beers, and a domestic and international wine list are also available.
  • 2nd Floor Mezzanine Bar and Balcony Dining – suitable for relaxed “nights out” or, on a “booked -out” basis. The perfect venue for private meetings and parties.
  • Mama’s Delikatessen – the place to order cold cuts, savory meats, imported cheeses, salads, pastries, baked goods, or take away items from the Das Bistro Mamas menu – all to be enjoyed on-site or on a takeaway basis.
  • Coffee Bar – Freshly ground gourmet coffee prepared by a talented barista to be enjoyed on the premises or to go.
  • Display area for the wide range of products produced and sold by PT Soejasch Bali to the general public, hotels, villas, restaurants, and major food franchises.
  • Cold Storage – The complex is also home to a vast state-of-the-art cold storage facility.

Catering services to private residences and villas are also available.

Health Protocols Apply

Every aspect of PT Soejasch Bali’s operations – both front and back-of-house – has been built to operate in compliance comply with the strictest international standards for cleanliness and food security. Staff and guests’ temperatures are checked at the door, mask-wearing is maximized for both staff and guests, and physical distancing rules are followed.

ECONOMIST PROPOSES TOURISM FUND TO REVIVE BALI ECONOMY

A national economist, Faisal Basri from Indonesia University, has initiated fundraising to revive the pandemic-stuck economy of Bali.

According to Basri, tourism and hospitality businesses in Bali are in dire need of financial support from the central government.

“I suggested the fundraising program during the previous International Tourism Outlook in Bali, so we could use the money to help Bali” said Basri during a webinar for Economic Outlook KAHMIPreneur 2021 on Sunday (3/1).

The money is to be collected to provide cash assistance primarily to small businesses.

Currently, local proprietors have insufficient access to financial support in comparison to large accommodation businesses with international networks.

He also added that facilitating travel bubbles with neighboring countries like Singapore is important for the economy of Bali which is highly dependent on tourism.

While the Bali-Singapore travel bubble is in talks, an agreement concerning mutual protocols is yet to be determined.

“We need to support this travel bubble plan in order to help the people in Bali. If it results successfully, the travel bubble method can be implemented in other areas like West Nusa and East Nusa in the future” Basri added.

Basri also mentioned the agreement between China and South Korea as an example. Both nations came to an agreement that would mutually benefit both economies.

Travel bubbles need to be stimulated in areas that rely on the tourism sector, otherwise people will fall into a deeper crisis.

Bali’s Wish List for Sandiaga Uno

NusaBali reports that Indonesia’s newly appointed Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Sandiaga S. Uno, is being called upon by members of Bali’s tourism industry to restore the Island’s economy quickly.

Given Sandiaga’s reputation as a successful millennial businessman and politician, many believe him uniquely qualified to revitalize national tourism.

The chairman of the Bali Villa Association (BVA), I Gede Sukarta, commenting on the industry’s aspirational hopes for a revitalized tourism industry, said, “Sandiaga is innovative and must act quickly.”

Sukarta describes Bali Tourism as in a state of collapse due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the Balinese people destitute.

Sukarta admitted that Sandiaga would need assistance from many parties, tourism stakeholders, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Minister of Transportation, Minister of Trade, and Minister of State-owned Enterprises. Nonetheless, Sukarta remains optimistic that the new Tourism Minister will be able to rejuvenate national tourism.

Sukarta also admitted that Bali remains isolated from foreign visitors because of closed travel borders that, over time, will reopen when foreigners feel it is safe to revisit Bali.

“Through collaboration with foreign legations and ambassadors from friendly nations, Bali will be able to communicate the condition of Indonesia, specifically underlining that Bali is safe to visit,” said Sukarta.

Separately, the Nawacita Pariwisata Indonesia (NPI) chairman, I Gusti Kade Sutawa, is calling on Sandiaga Uno to quickly coordinate with all tourism stakeholders to rebuild the tourism industry expeditiously.

Sutawa, the head of Nawacita Pariwisata, says the national tourism industry will be preceded by the restoration of Bali’s tourism industry.

NPI has created a list of steps they hope the new Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy will undertake:

  1. They hope Sandiaga Uno will reopen borders and restore direct international flights to Bali.
  2. To restructure the tourism sector’s debt for the coming year, which is currently proving too burdensome for many tourism players.
  3. Extend aid to tourism workers left unemployed or working part-time because of the continuing pandemic.

MARINE ECOSYSTEM PROJECT COMPLETED IN BALI SEA

After long delays posed by harsh weather conditions, marine conservation development in the Bali Sea along Buleleng coast is now complete.

Indonesia Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) planted corals and various underwater structures across 7 hectares of the Bali Sea.

The project is expected to restore conditions of the underwater ecosystem on the North Coast of Buleleng for years to come.

As of last Wednesday (30/12), the ICRG team had planted 13,767 coral reefs, fish domes and VW cars.

The project was initiated by the Directorate General of Marine Space in partnership with the Marine and Fishery Ministry, who hope to positively impact the aquatic ecosystem.

Along with protecting ocean resources, the program enabled job opportunities for residents within the area that lost their job due to the pandemic.

The team of 250 members initially faced obstacles due to harsh weather conditions that influenced high sea currents and strong waves.

One of the scuba divers, Kadek Ada Maja, believes that the underwater sea park will bring a positive effect to local fishermen and the community.

“We have so much potential to develop our underwater tourism in the future” Maja said.

This Buleleng ICRG program is concentrating on six villages in North Bali: Les Village, Bondalem Village, Pacung Village, Baktiseraga Village, Tukadmungga Village and Kaliasem Village.

Some activists were sceptical towards the start of project. In response to their concern, the Deputy of Marine Resources, Safri Burhanuddin explained that the team has been working very carefully, and the project has been authorized by Indonesian Science Agency (LIPI).

The total of 16,000 underwater structures planted will be continuously monitored and maintained for a lasting impact on the marine environment and local communities.

Bali imposes negative PCR test result requirement in time for year-end holiday

If you’re planning to spend the year-end holiday in Bali, it’s best to note that domestic tourists flying into Ngurah Rai International Airport are now required to present a negative PCR test result, according to a new circular issued by the provincial government.

The latest update, issued today, comes as officials expect more domestic travelers to visit Bali in time for Christmas and the New Year, while COVID-19 cases are still on the rise in the province and throughout Indonesia.

Instead of prohibiting travel altogether to curb coronavirus transmissions, the government has decided to add some new requirements. This includes negative PCR test results for all air travelers and negative rapid test results for travelers who use other modes of transport to enter Bali.

The new circular, which also includes other provisions for year-end celebrations, will come into effect this Friday and last until Jan. 4, 2021.

HOTEL BOOKINGS RISE IN NUSA DUA AS HOLIDAYS APPROACH

The Managing Director of The Nusa Dua Hotel, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, has said that hotel occupancy in November was relatively stable, and is noticeably increasing for December. This is a good indicator that Bali’s tourism sector is beginning to heal.

“Hotels in Nusa Dua managed by the Indonesian Tourism Development Center (ITDC) confirmed an increase in bookings from domestic tourists for the year-end holiday” said Ardita during an interview on Wednesday 2/12.

He explained that occupancy is at 12 percent for December 1st to December 24th is, and 32 percent from Dec 24th to Dec 31st.

Many hotels have reached more than 60 percent occupancy leading up to the first week of January.

Meanwhile, Ardita reminds hotel management to be precautious in following prevention protocols. Day-to-day operations will reflect on Bali’s health and safety efforts as the Central Government prepares to resume international travel.

Ardita plans to reorchestrate preventive measures, stating “I don’t think it will be easy to receive international visitors as many governments aim to protect their citizens through strict travel restrictions. We will need to establish a better concept and higher standard so they feel safe enough to visit the island” Ardita said.

Finally, Ardita reminds the people of Bali to remain abiding by health and safety protocols, such as wearing face masks and physical distancing in embracing the new normal before the border reopens.

As plans to reopen the border arise, the Government of Indonesia has outlined new entry protocols and screening measures for international travelers.

During an official visit in Tokyo on Friday (5/12), The Coordinator of Maritime and Investment Minister, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, expressed that he does not want to rush the reopening process without first ensuring that Bali is safe from Covid-19.

The Minister stated that the government would require an antigen test from every visitor entering Indonesian borders.

“We will also facilitate self-isolating accommodations at the government’s expense” said Luhut. He added that he is committed to provide better health facilities, world class hospitals and collaboration with leading medical labs in Japan.

Meanwhile, Bali is still in recovery from the pandemic which began more than 10 months ago. As an island heavily reliant on international tourism, Bali is facing a financial crisis.

The Provincial Government is trying to combat the situation by adopting preventive measures such as face masks, sanitizing, temperature checking, and disinfecting.

Additionally, a Clean Health and Safety Environment (CHSE) certificate must be attained by operating hospitality businesses to verify the government health and safety standard. With these measures in place, Bali hopes that The Central Government will consider reopening the border in the near future.

Early 2021 Return of Intl Tourists to Bali?

Despite social media news to the contrary, Bali’s Deputy-Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace) emphasizes that Bali will remain closed to foreign tourists until at least the end of 2020. His assurances discount any suggestions that Bali will once again welcome foreigners on 01 December 2020.

Quoted by Beritabali.com and CNBC IndonesiaCok Ace said on Tuesday, 17 November 2020, “There is no plan to reopen for foreign tourists on 01 December.”

The Deputy-Governor said that it is impossible to confirm when Bali will reopen for foreign tourists, underlining it was unlikely Bali would reopen its international border any time in 2020. Adding, “It looks as though (opening of Bali’s borders to foreign tourists) will happen early next year (2021).”

The Deputy-Governor, who is also a leading tourism figure in Bali, explained many considerations are connected to Bali’s reopening to foreign tourists. Chief among these are developments in the continuing COVID-19 Pandemic and the Government’s success in controlling the disease.

“Besides our efforts in Bali (to control COVID-19), the Central Government must make a decision, and the prevailing condition in tourism source country markets also comes into play,” said Cok Ace. He assured the public that the Provincial Government of Bali continues to monitor the latest developments and is studying the total reopening of the Island’s tourism industry from several perspectives.

The Central Government in Jakarta declared Bali open only for domestic tourists at the end of July 2020. Initially, plans were for Bali to reopen to foreign tourists on 11 September 2020. However, the 11th September date was then postponed indefinitely by Jakarta, based on the developing outbreak of the Pandemic.

The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that Indonesia could not consider welcoming foreign tourists until sometime after 2020. “We are focusing on the domestic market for the recovery of the national tourism sector. We want domestic tourists to become 70% of the (overall) tourism market. The problem is that foreign tourists think that we can receive them at year’s end. But, first, let’s consult internally,” said Minister Panjaitan at a recent gathering of Indonesian entrepreneurs.

GWK Cultural Park Opens 04 December 2020

he head of the Provincial Tourism Service for Bali, Putu Astawa, has confirmed that the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK) will reopen on 04 December 2020.

As reported by Kompas.com, Astawa said on Thursday, 19 November 2020: “Based on a circular memorandum, the Park is set to open on 04 December 2020.

The 60-hectare Garuda Kencana Wisnu Cultural Park (GWK), located just south of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, is the home to a 121-meter high statue depicting the Lord Vishnu atop a mythical Garuda Bird opened in August 2018.

Designed by Balinese artists Nyoman Nuarta, the 75-meter high statue sits atop a 46-meter pedestal creating a 121-meter monument 30-meters taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York City and a structure as tall as a 21-story building. Made of copper and brass sheeting cast over a stainless-steel skeletal frame, the monument’s outside surface measures 22,000 square meters and weighs an estimated 4,000 tonnes.

The GWK monument was closed on 21 March 2020 under Provincial Government directives to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During the close-down, GWK management has undertaken anticipatory steps to guarantee public safety once the Park reopens in the “new normal,” including modifications in how the monument’s lift is operated to bring people to the top of the statue for the panoramic view of South Bali.

During the initial reopening of operations, the number of visitors to GWK will be limited to 500 people, much less than the normal pre-pandemic levels of 2,000 – 5,000 people who came to the Park daily.

The GWK Monument is comprised of 30 floors, only a portion of which are now open to the public.

Health Protocols at the GWK Cultural Park

With the reopening of the Park on 04 December, health protocols will be in place to protect visitors’ health and prevent the spread of COVOD-19. Chief among these are quotas limiting the number of people allowed to visit the Park at any one time. Quotas now limit visitors to 500 per day – less than 50% of normal attendance levels.

Physical distancing rules are also now in effect in every aspect of the Park’s operation, including management of parking areas, ticket kiosk sales, entry gates, restaurant operations, public toilet facilities, and the GWK musholla.
