The 5 best places to go

This section shows the best of Bali, the places that have all deserved five stars

Bedugul
Bedugul is Bali’s highland retreat, tucked into the crater of a volcano (1400 meters). Lush pine forests seem to create freshness in the air. Bedugul is known for the quality of its fruit, vegetables and flowers. The beautifully scenic lake Bratan, with its harmonious mountain panorama, provides everything from recreation to water for the springs, rivers and rice fields below. Boats, water skiing and parasailing are among the many water sports available in this area. Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, the temple that seems to rise out of the lake, presents itself beautifully. Also visit the botanical garden (Kebun Raya).

From Kuta: 1½ hour
Route: Kuta-Denpasar (dir. Singaraja)-Bedugul

——————————————————————————–
Menjangan
This little island off Bali’s west coast is known for its beautiful coral reefs found nearby and the wealth of tropical fish inhabiting the waters around it. Menjangan is an excellent diving spot that has not been spoilt by tourism, possibly because it is quite far from the airport. The island itself is also worth a visit because of the beautiful sceneries it offers. Day trips by boat and rental of diving equipment can be arranged at nearby Labuan Lalang.

From Kuta: 3½ hours
Route: Kuta-Denpasar-Gilimanuk-Menjangan

——————————————————————————–
Pantai Seseh
Start the beach walk of your life just south of Tanah Lot. Pantai Seseh is a quiet beach of black volcanic sand that is mainly visited by local fishermen. Quiet, rough, and close to nature, this is beach is simply unforgettable.

From Kuta: 45 minutes
Route: Kuta-Denpasar-Tanah Lot

——————————————————————————–
Tampaksiring
This little town offers is close to three superb places to visit. Pura Tirta Empul is a holy temple with bathing pools fed by the Pakerisan river. In the center of Tampaksiring is a little road that leads to Gunung Kawi, the ‘valley of the kings’, perhaps the most memorable place to see on Bali. Just north of Tampaksiring is a palace built by former president Sukarno in the 1950s.

From Kuta: 1½ hour
Route: Kuta-Denpasar-Ubud-Tampaksiring

——————————————————————————–
Tirtagangga
The water palace at Tirtagangga, about 6 km northwest of Amlapura, was built in 1948 by the last king of Karangasem, in a series of formal pools fed by a sacred spring. The eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 badly damaged the palace. It has gradually been restored, and is open to the public for a small fee. The main attraction is the swimming, which is permitted in several designated pools: a large one open to anyone, and a smaller one closer to the spring, for which an additional fee is charged. The water is indescribably refreshing, a swimming pool of holy water.

From Kuta: 2½ hours
Route: Kuta-Denpasar-Padangbai-Amlapura

Green Bali

ecopic01.gif - 7.80 KbGreen Bali is the eco-tourist’s playground of green jungle thrills and spectacular waterfall spills. Bali parks, jungles and hills are home to a host of wildlife, which includes monkeys, civets, mousedeer, barking deer and flocks of gaily-feathered beauties like the endemic Bali starling, dollar birds, wild fowl, sea eagles, sandpipers, blue kingfishers, white herons and egrets, sparrows, cuckoos and wood swallows.

Bali’s bag of goodies for the nature inclined are the many beautiful shades and hues of greens of its wildlife forests and parks, which include the Ubud Monkey Forest, Sangeh Monkey Forest, Bali Elephant Park in Central Bali, Bali Bird Park in Singapadu, and Bali Butterfly Park.Have a splashing time at Bali’s numerous waterfalls, from the Gitgit Falls, Blahmantung Falls, and Singsing Falls, to the cool pools of Yeh Sanih and the soothingly hot springs of Banjar. Soak up on refreshing jungle sights and smells at Bali’s rich national park and botanical gardens; and drink in the splendour of its ancient mounts and volcanoes.

So, if natural greens are your favourite hues, come on round to Bali and have some fun in Mother Nature’s very own theme park!

Ubud Monkey Forest is an amazing place to be and an extremely rewarding experience. Watch friendly and mischievous monkeys doing their thing in their own habitat, and watch them watching you doing your thing in their habitat! It definitely is sheer fun to see these intelligent creatures observing us trying to figure out their hierarchy.Ubud Monkey Forest is located in Ubud, Central Bali, and pleasantly laid out along two roads; thus affording hours of leisurely roaming around without the hassle of getting lost. This monkey forest is rather smaller than the Sangeh Monkey Forest, but its star attractions come with just as much fun.

Found to the south of Monkey Forest Road, this small beautiful forest is home to a band of grey monkeys, but their immediate number still remains unknown. The main tourist hangout is about a hundred metres from the entrance.

Most visitors rarely venture much farther out than this, as this area is the place to be, with lots of monkeys, people and their resulting antics to enjoy. The monkeys will know that visitors have a treat or two for them, but it is the big males which usually prevail for the bananas; and it is not wise to try to pet the monkeys as they are natural and wild.

Monkeys aside, the Ubud Monkey Forest is indeed a lovely and relaxing place to be. Take for instance the interesting path beside a great banyan tree to the right of the entrance, meandering down to a charming bathing temple surrounded by lush remnants of the dipterocarp forest.

Just off the main square is a lovely arched stone bridge leading to the forest’s most alluring feature – the Hindu elephant-headed Lord Ganesh sitting comfortably overlooking a small, square, moss-covered pool where several koi swim at his feet!

The Sangeh Monkey Forest near the village of Sangeh, in south western Bali, is 6 hectares of renowned forested land of giant nutmeg trees, doubling as homes to hordes of sacred monkeys in the forest. The monkeys here inhabit both the trees and the Pura Bukit Sari, a temple deep within the fragrant greens.

Bali’s majestic Indonesian Elephants can be found in the Bali Elephant Safari Park of Desa Taro, north of Ubud. This park offers visitors a chance to get up close and personal with the peaceful giants and also go for a sight-seeing expedition towering on the backs of these peaceful creatures.
The Bali Butterfly Park in Tabanan is the island’s sole butterfly enclosure. The park has acres of charming grounds and intricately landscaped gardens, making it a fitting home to the many flying colours. This place is definitely worth a visit. The Bali Bird Park in Batubulan, meanwhile, has over a thousand feathered beauties which include nearly every rare and varied species in the whole of Indonesia. Do take note of the bird park’s beautifully landscaped grounds.
The cascading Gitgit Waterfalls in the south of Singaraja, is a spectacular 40 metres of crystal clear cool liquid, rushing headlong into a seemingly bottomless pool of cool refreshment. This alluring pool carries a tale of its own which can only be unlocked by a visit. The Blahmantung Waterfalls in Pupuan takes quite a walk to reach but is really worth the effort. The Air Terjun Singsing west of Lovina, actually means Daybreak Waterfall, and truly gushes will all the possibilities and strength of a refreshing brand new day.

Another spot well known for its waters are the pools of Yeh Sanih. The attractions here are actually freshwater springs channelled into clean and tempting swimming pools, amid charming garden surroundings.

The steaming Hot Springs of Banjar are also definitely worth a few days of heavenly soaking. It is also conveniently close to the Brahmavihara Arama in Banjar, Bali’s only Buddhist monastery, with a handsome structure offering inspiring views of land and sky meeting sea.

It is truly a treat to be able to wander freely around the Bali Botanical Gardens in Bedugul, deep in the heart of northern Bali. Established in 1959, it is a never ending 120 hectares, high on the slopes of Tree Mountain; with a massive collection of trees; and half a thousand species of exotic orchids!Western Bali’s Taman Nasional Bali Barat is a conservation park spread over almost the whole of the island’s western tip. It is bordered by open savannahs, dense rainforests, tangles of mangrove swamps, and the colourful coral reefs of the renowned Deer Island, locally called Pulau Menjangan, habitat of the rare Java Deer.
Bali’s ancient and rugged landscape is well represented by the Danau Batur, also known as the Gunung Batur area. The volcanic cones of Gunung Batur are located in inspiringly massive bowl-shaped calderas. The majestic Gunung Batur rises to a towering 1717 metres, and remains one of Bali’s natural wonders. Iit really does make for perfect trekking for the eco-minded. But the island’s ultimate trekking hurdle is called Gunung Agung. Also ecopic02.gif - 7.80 Kb
Bali’s highest and most revered mount, it is not difficult to climb, although it does turn into quite a workout. Remember to start really early – a few hours before sunrise. The dry season of April till October will always be the best time to conquer Mount Agung, but make sure that your date of challenge does not coincide with any festivals held at Bali’s Mother Temple, Pura Besakih, high on the slopes of this imposing beauty.

Balinese Cuisine

Balinese cuisine is extremely tasty and satisfying to the taste buds and also tummy.

The delicious Balinese flavour is further enhanced by the tangy freshness of the dish, be it meat, seafood or vegetables. Balinese cooking is tender on the taste buds without being bland; colourful without excess of spiciness; and appetising yet filling.

A taste of some traditional Balinese dishes will surely have you coming back for seconds, then thirds, and lot more! Although Bali is but a little, the diversity and different styles of cooking all come together to make Bali a culinary adventure hard to resist. So traipse around the island to your heart’s and tummy’s content

Most of the places in Denpasar cater for locals, Indonesians visitors and immigrants, so you’ll be sure of a good selection of authentic Balinese fare and reasonable prices. Naturally, the cheapest places around are the warung at the bemo terminals, and the food stalls at the Pasar Kumbasari and Pasar Burung markets.A place for typical Asian Chinese food is the Restaurant Atoom Baru. Dishes can be gotten for 7,000 rp to 12,000rp. The classy Restaurant Hong Kong, across the road, boasts an inordinately wide range of Chinese and Indonesia cuisine, but at high prices. You’d find far better value for money at Mie 88, although the menu may not be quite that extensive. Prices, however, are very reasonable, from 4,500rp to 6,500rp. not much choice is offered in Renon, but Pondok Melati has good seafood, even if setting is noisy.

Denpasar’s better places include Kak Man restaurant and Ayam Goreng Taliwag. For the uninitiated and culinary cowards, various shopping centers have upstairs eateries, and most have fast food outlets like MacDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut, to start you off on your culinary adventure of superb Balinese food.

Place to eat in Kuta are really countless. There are tiny hawker’s carts, gourmet hotel restaurants and well-known fast food outlets. Kuta also offers international and multicultural cuisine. you could stay in Kuta for a whole month, eat in a different place for every meal and still wouldn’t eat the same thing twice! If budget is a concern, try places catering to local workers, like food stalls or warungs along Legian Beach in afternoon, and opposite Hard Rock Cafe’ in Kuta. These place serve filing yet delicious fare and you’ll be assured of your money’s worth. Another option is to buy food from local supermarket like the Matahari shopping centres and from markets.

Poppies is one of oldest and most popular restaurant in Kuta. It is located in a tine lane between Jalan Legian and the beach; and prices are quite high for the well prepared food. But the place seems to thrive on reputation alone. TJ’s is the deservedly popular Mexican restaurant, with good ambience and mouth-watering main courses.

Made’s Warung, in the same area, is popular with meals from 10,000rp to 15,000rp; while the Nusa Indah Bar & Restaurant is the perfect place for succulent seafood at a very reasonable 6,000rp, in a friendly atmosphere. The quaint Bamboo Corner is another good place to try seafood special. service is friendly at Bali Asi, and lunchtime pizza only 5,000rp.

There are almost endless possibilities along Jln Legian. Sushi Bar Kunti has an authentic japanese set menu for 25,000rp; the Expresso Bar & Pizzaria serves hearty pizza in a pleasant setting; and the Gemini continues to get good reviews for fragrant Chinese food, despite its bare appearance. Or visit the incongruous Bounty II, a replica of the famous ship, for some thing different and enjoy good-value buffets. Aroma Cafe’ is a mid-priced vegetarian restaurant with tantalizing food in a delightful garden setting. Or check out the Mama Lucia Italian restaurant if you can shoulder the expensive 15,000-22,000rp for the dish.

But Legian warung Kopi is well regarded for its varied menu of European, Asian and vegetarian dishes, hearty breakfast and sinful desserts. Or drop by Taman Garden for its very popular and delicious meals, decent happy hours and effusive staff. This is one places which honestly attracts lots of repeat business. Other good places are the popular but pricey Orchid garden Restaurant; and the Garden Restaurant with excellent happy hour and cheap breakfasts.

Joni Sunken Bar & Restaurant offers the unique experience of eating and drinking while semi-immersed in a swimming pool. There is also live music and good-value buffet breakfasts for 8,50rp. Further north thing get more expensive but standards get higher too – fashionable end of town. Some of the Bali’s most interesting places are Mexican restaurant Poco Loco and Topi Koko Restaurant, with pretty good French meals. Swiss Restaurant is adjacent to the Swiss consul, so should have some credibility.

Bukit Peninsula has served nice beachfront restaurants, including the Mini Restaurant and Mina garden in Benoa village. For atouch of real class, Beluga Marine has some fantastic meals at not so outrageous prices considering thedecor and location. Cafe’ Bagus is away from beach but pretty cheap, about 6,000rp for a buffet breakfast is great value. Rumah Makan Padma too has sensible prices of about 10,000rp for seafood, and amenu in German. Cheaper warung around the entrances to the resorts cater to local hotel staff, and offer best value for money.

The cheapest place grab or meal at sanur Bar & Restaurant, with tempting meals and tantalising 3-course set menus while the Puri mango Guest House nearby has a restaurant serving a superb pizzas and value for money 3-course menus. warang Wina, also called Vienna Cafe’, along the northern end of Jalan Danau Tamblingan, offers reasonable prices and will definitely appeal to German-speakers. The Kuri Putih is a hit with its reasonably priced ‘mexi-bali’ food for lunch; and taman Bayu has a range of generous main courses fo about 15,000rp and balinese dancing om most nights.Other appetile-appeasing and budget-satisfying places to try include the friendly Warung Balisun; and Made’s Kitchen, a charming and cheap place to grab some snacks and drinks. Most of the walkway along central Sanur is cluttered with cafes and restaurants like the Mango Bar & Restaurant, Benno’s Corner Cafe’ and Sanur Beach Market & Bar restaurant , all not bad value and very popular.
Ubud’s many restaurants probably offer the best and most interesting food on the island. Can get excellent western and Indonesian meals, and authentic balinese dishes will often be on menu as well, including the exotic turtle satay. There are restaurants upon restaurants, warungs upon warungs, but priced are considerably lower in areas where budget travellers normally stay, that is, along the roads heading north of Jalan Raya, and along Jalan Sugriwa, Jalan Hanoman and Jalan Jembawan.Right across the road is the Lotus Cafe’, for a long time, the place to eat. A leisurely meal over their lotus pond is still an Ubud insitution, but will cost. Casa Luna, with its superb international menu, is very popular, not least for its freshly baked bread and cakes. Two extremely popular places along Jalan Suweta are the Coconut Cafe’ and Cafe’ Angkasa, which maybe Ubud’s best coffee house.

Run by endearing Ibu canderi, Canderi’s Warung serves generous portions. The Ibu Rai Bar & Restaurant, Noni orli, Lilies Garden Restaurant and Cafe’ Bali all ahve elegant setting and a worth the aplurge. The Dian Cafe’ has a good range and affordable prices, and so does Jaya Cafe’ and Yogyakarta cafe’.

The new Barli Buddha Health Food Shop is a popular place to meet other travellers, and relax with something healthy to eat or drink. Three Brothers Restaurant is one of several good places along Jalan Hanoman. For views, it’shard to beat charming but pricey Murni’s warung or Begger’s Bush Pub.

Padang Bai’s seafood is excellent and cheap, with most restaurants located along the beachfront. The Depot Segara is the best place for breakfast, while the Putri Ayu Cafe’ serves seafood specials for about 6,500rp, as does Warung Manggo. The Ozone Cafe’ is an evening gathering place, and The Pandon Restaurant is also relaxed but a little more expensive than others. The restaurant at the Topi Inn is about the fanciest place in Padang Bai. Hotel Puri Rai has town’s one, and only so far, video show.
