Car Free Day at Jakarta’s Sudirman, Thamrin Attracts Hundreds

Some people do exercises, some others have futsal competition, and many others are just walking along the fast lane of Jakarta’s Sudirman and Thamrin main roads as the roads are closed to motor vehicles Sunday morning.

Some groups of people organized race walking competition for children, some others organized group cycling along the fast lane, and many others were chatting up with their family members along the roads.

Antara reported that the car free day attracted hundreds of residents to Jakarta’s busiest roads.

The Jakarta Police’s Traffic Management Center closed the main roads until midday. No cars are allowed to enter the fast lanes. Only Transjakarta public buses are allowed to operate.

The car free day policy is part of Jakarta’s efforts to reduce pollution in the city of over 10 million people.
